SUMMARY:Ketamine and Psychedelic Substances in Practice: What Providers and Communities Need to Know
DESCRIPTION:This advanced session explores the evolving landscape of ketamine and other psychedelic substances as they appear in clinical settings\, community conversations\, and personal use. Participants will examine current evidence\, emerging models of care\, ethical considerations\, and how providers can engage in informed\, nonjudgmental conversations while navigating Maryland’s legal and clinical context. \n\n\n\nLearning Objectives\n\n\n\nAfter completing this activity\, the participant should be better able to: \n\n\n\n\nSummarize the current legal status\, regulatory considerations\, and ethical risks related to psychedelic substances in the United States\, with attention to clinical practice implications in Maryland.\n\n\n\nExplore core components of psychedelic-assisted therapy and psychedelic harm-reduction models\, including preparation\, navigation\, and integration practices relevant to outpatient mental health settings.\n\n\n\nApply clinical screening principles to identify appropriate and inappropriate candidates for psychedelic-related work\, including recognizing contraindications\, special population considerations\, and referral pathways for safe client care.\n\n\n\n\nFaculty\n\n\n\nLauren C. Going\, LCSW-C\, RYT is a Maryland based psychotherapist and co-founder of Inner Path Wellness\, the city’s first psychedelic-assisted therapy center. She specializes in ketamine- and psychedelic-assisted therapies and provides training and consultation on trauma-informed and integrative care approaches. Ms. Going also serves as an integration therapist for research studies at Johns Hopkins and Sheppard Pratt and is an experienced speaker and educator in emerging therapeutic practices.

Growing up with a passion for reading\, anime\, video games\, and cartoons\, and at the time to be the next karate kid\, mastering different styles of martial arts\, and gymnastics. Jorian started their journey in 2016\, receiving the Dale L. Grundy Youth Leadership Award\, in tandem with becoming the Youth Ambassador for National Youth HIV/AIDS Awareness Day\, while in conjunction with working for a nonprofit that focuses on Latin Social Justice Work specifically in Ending The HIV Epidemic. Through the years Jorian participated in various roles\, wearing many hats. Navigating Fellowships with NMAC\, becoming a two-time facilitator for ViiV HealthCare Youth Summit\, and sitting in and on multiple panels discussing the various intersectionalities of what living with HIV looks like in the eyes of the many who experience it. Becoming the White House Future Leader in HIV\, becoming a face for many to see in the Gilead campaign and faculty and advisory board for HealthHIV Education for Pan-Viral Testing. As Jorian might be small in height\, their energy presence stands firm. When Jorian is not saving the world\, you can catch him at home; attending to his plants\, being a dog dad\, having a book in his hand\, playing video games\, watching anime or reality TV\, cooking\, and baking.

Highlights on how nonjudgmental\, evidence-informed approaches can promote health\, informed choice\, and personal autonomy for both the parent and baby will also be shared. \n\n\n\nParticipants will gain a deeper understanding of the challenges people may face during pregnancy while using drugs\, and why a whole-person\, supportive approach matters. Through real-world examples and practical strategies\, this session will equip the drug user health workforce with tools to provide caring\, ethical support that centers on the needs and well-being of both lives. \n\n\n\nLearning Objectives\n\n\n\nBy the end of the webinar\, participants will be able to: \n\n\n\n\nDescribe at least three ethical principles essential to providing supportive care during pregnancy for people at risk for overdose.\n\n\n\nIdentify at least three unique challenges faced during pregnancy by people at risk for overdose.\n\n\n\nDescribe at least two drug user health strategies that promote holistic health during pregnancy.\n\n\n\n\nFaculty\n\n\n\nKelly S. Ramsey\, MD\, MPH\, MA\, FACP\, DFASAM is a board-certified internal medicine and addiction medicine physician who has treated substance use disorder since 2004. She has focused her career on providing care for people at risk of overdose\, treating HIV\, hepatitis C (HCV)\, and primarily opioid use disorder. She has worked in an opioid treatment program (OTP) and federally qualified health center (FQHC) settings. More recently\, Dr. Ramsey worked as the Chief of Medical Services at the NYS Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS)\, in a policy\, regulatory\, and clinical role through the end of 2023. Dr. Ramsey currently works as an Addiction Medicine Physician and Consultant\, as well as providing low threshold clinical care and clinical supervision in addiction medicine in two drug user health hubs.
